Drivers in Pennsylvania know that there is always a risk of being involved in a car accident when traveling or commuting. Should you be involved in a car accident, the first thing to do is remain calm. Take a couple of deep breaths before beginning the process of assessing the situation and vehicles to keep a clear head.

The first step after a motor vehicle accident is to check yourself and other passengers in the vehicles for any injuries. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately and ask for paramedic assistance. Police also should be sent to the scene. They can take statements from everyone involved in the accident and assess who was at fault. This information may be critical later on when insurance companies issue settlements. After calling for help, move any working vehicles off of the middle of the road to a safer location. Never move anyone who is severely injured or if a neck injury is suspected.

Next, document the crash. Use a cell phone or disposable camera and take pictures of the accident, Include pictures of the vehicles, nearby traffic signs or signals and any property damage. Though it is best to limit interaction with the other parties, you should exchange insurance information and get the names of witnesses. Get a copy of the police report and talk to your insurance company. They will determine what will be covered and what deductibles may apply to get you and your vehicle on the road again.

Though it is best to always file an insurance claim, the amount paid may not always cover the costs of repairing the vehicle, lost wages due to time taken off of work and medical bills. If you are injured after an accident, it may be best to speak to an attorney. They might be able to determine if filing a civil lawsuit will best help you get the monetary help you need to get medical help and repair your vehicle.
