Bankruptcy: A Powerful Tool To Obtain Debt Relief

For individuals facing financial problems, federal law provides debt relief through bankruptcy. Bankruptcy is a powerful tool that can help you avoid home foreclosure and put an immediate stop to wage garnishment, collection lawsuits, utility cutoff, auto repossession and creditor harassment.

Filing for bankruptcy is not the right choice for everyone. If you are facing a challenging debt situation, you can rely on the attorneys at Lieberman, Tamulonis & Hobbs to be honest with you about your debt relief options and point you in the direction that will best protect your financial future.

We are licensed attorneys - not a fly-by-night debt consolidation company. We will listen. We will explore different options. And we will work with you until we find a solution. With more than 100 years of combined experience, our lawyers have the knowledge and skill to help you begin a new chapter in your life.

Chapter 7: Liquidate Your Debts And Make A Fresh Start

Chapter 7 is often called "liquidation bankruptcy" and gives debtors a fresh start by wiping away much of their existing debt. In Chapter 7 bankruptcy, some of your property may be sold ("liquidated") to pay back a portion of your debt. In return, most or all of your unsecured debts (debts not secured by collateral) will be eliminated. The Chapter 7 process usually lasts four to six months and is designed for people who do not have a regular income, or whose income falls below a certain threshold.

Chapter 13: Get Back On Track With A Manageable Repayment Plan

If you are facing the threat of foreclosure, filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy can be one of the best ways to save your home, protect your assets and get caught up on other outstanding debts. In Chapter 13 bankruptcy, none of your property is taken or sold to pay off creditors. Instead, you enter into a manageable repayment plan to pay off some or all of your debts (including mortgage arrears) over a three- to five-year period. At the end of the repayment plan, your remaining debts will likely be eliminated.
